ANGELL, JAMES ROWLAND

(1869), an American university president, 5, in Burlington, Vt. Graduating from the University of Michigan, in 1890, he took a two years’ post-graduate course at Harvard University, followed by courses at the universities in Berlin and Halle, Germany, and a period of travel on the Continent. Returning — home, in 1893, he began teaching — hilosophy at the University of Minesota. A year later he went to the Jniversity of Chicago, there to become istant profe or of psychology and lireetor of the psychological laboratory. nm 1905 he became profe or and head the department of psychology. From 918 till the following year he was.cting president of the institution. During the period that the U.S. Army vas being recruited and organized for yperations against Germany during the World War, Prof. Angell a isted the War Department as expert psychologist n cla ifying the personnel of the nilitary organization. In 1921 he be- ~ame president of Yale University. Among his most notable works are Psychology, four editions, 1908 and Chapters from Modern Psychology, 1911.
