Nancy

City of n.e. France, on the Meurthe, 29 m. s. of Metz; once capital of Lorraine. Charles the Bold of Burgundy took it Nov. 29, 1475, lost it Oct. 5, 1476, and was defeated and slain here Jan. 5, 1477. Stan is las, ex-king of Poland, lived here 1735-46, and did much for its adornment. Blücher took it Jan. 1814. It is beautifully built, contains numerous institutions of learning, and has considerable trade and manufactures. Pop., 1891, 87,110.
