pl. [Mod. Latin sterco rari ( us ); Lat. fem. pl. adj. suff. -inæ.] [STERCORARIUS.] ster-co-rär-I-ŭs, s. [Lat.=pertaining to dung.] Ornith.: Skua (q. v.), a genus of Laride, in some cla ifications made a sub-family Stercorariine. These birds were at first cla ed with the Gulls [LARUS], but were separated on account of differences in external character and habits, and placed in a separate genus, Lestris (q. v.). The Linnæan name Stercorarius was adopted by Bri on, with a generic description ( Ornithol., vi. 150), in 1760, and is now revived by those authors who are endeavoring to purify nomenclature and to restore to use names originally given.
