Elevator

(el'e-va-tor.) [From L. el evo, I raise up.] (Anat.) Designating various muscles which serve to raise those parts of the body to which they pertain; as, the elevator of the epiglottis, .-(Com.) In the U. States, the name given to granaries or store-houses for grain erected alongside a wharf or river-bank, and into which grain in bulk is carried upward, or elevated, by machinery worked by steam-power, direct from the ship's hold into bins within the building. One of the largest of these structures is the Niagara Elevator at Buffalo, New York. [s. 325]
