TESSE DU (1741-93), mistre of Louis XV.; fled to England at outbreak of Revolution, but returned and was guillotined during Terror. can naval officer; 6. Wexford, Ireland. He entered the American navy at the outbreak of the Revolution and commanded the brig Lexington and later the frigate Effing ham. While in charge of the latter ve el, then lying near Philadelphia, he made a daring raid and captured important stores and munitions from the British. As commander of the Reliance he took a number of valuable prizes including the British warships the building of the frigate United States. of which he afterwards became the commander. On the foundation of the U.S. navy in 1794 he became its first senior officer. A statue in his honor stands in Independence Square, Philadelphia
