NARD DE (1773-1842), Swi historian; b. Geneva. His output was tremendous. Tableau del’ Agriculiure Toscane, Traite de la Riche e Commerciale, A History of France (29 vols.), Nouveaux Principes Renai ance de la Liberte en Italie, are some of his famous works. (1869), a univ. pres.; 6. at Gates head, Eng.; s. of George and Mary Arnott Si on. He came to the U. S. in 1882 and was educated at the Kansas State | Agricultural College and at the University of Chicago. He began as @ teacher in public schools in 1886 and afterwards was connected with various colleges, including president of the State U. of Montana, 1917-21, after which he became prof. of philosophy in Reed College.
