JOHANN GOTTFRIED VON, (hür'dair,) a German philosopher and author, B. in East Pru ia, 1744, after acquiring a high reputation as a theologian, became court-preacher and counsellor of the Upper Consistory at Weimar, in which city he D. in 1803. Among his best productions are the anthological collection termed Volkslieder; The Spirit of Hebrew Poetry; and his unfinished masterpiece, Ideas on the Philosophy of the History of Mankind. Their influence over German literature and philosophy has been great. [s. 452]
