[Fr., from Lat. retro grad at us, pa. par. of retrogrado =to retrograde (q. v.).] I. Ordinary Language. 1. Lit .: The act or state of retrograding or going backward; retrogre ion. 2. Fig .: A moving backward or toward an inferior state; decline in excellence. deteriorating. tion. retruse A. As adj.: Discharging the urine backward. B. As subst.: An animal which discharges the urine backward. "Except it be in retromingents, and such as couple backward."-Browne: Vulgar Errors, bk. iii., ch. xvii. re-tro-ming-ent-lý, adv . [Eng. retromingent ; ly .] In a retromingent manner. re-tro-phar-ỹng-e-al, adj . [Pref. retro-, and Eng. pharyngeal (q. v.).] Pathol. Of or belonging to the hinder part of the pharynx. Used spec. of retro pharyngeal absce , which forms in some infants, or more rarely in adults, between the posterior surface of the pharynx and the muscles of the anterior part of the spine. It generally requires surgical treatment.
