Staff

(staf.) (Mil.) An establishment of officers in various departments, attached to the commander of an army. The S. is the medium of communication between the commander-in-chief and every department of an army. An ensign of authority; a badge of office; as, a constable's S.-(Mus.) The five lines and four spaces employed in musical notation.-(Lit.) A regularly arranged set of verses, in which the same order of sequence is preserved throughout. [s. 851]
