(1728-99), Scot. chemist and physician; 6. Bordeaux; lecturer on chem. Glasgow (1756); prof., Edinburgh (1766); discovered carbon dioxide, then called ‘Fixed air’ (1754), and propounded theories of ‘Specific heat’ and of ‘Latent heat.’
