Discord

[Fr. discorde: Lat. discord i a-dis, and cor, cord is, the heart.] Disagreement; want of order or harmony; variance; difference; opposition; di ension; contention; strife; disagreement of sounds; di onance; -the opposite of concord. (Mus.) A di onant or inharmonious combination of sounds, so called in contradistinction to concord , the effects of which it is intended to sweeten and relieve. Some require to be introduced by certain preparatives, | and to be succeeded or resolved by concords to which they have some relation. D. are sometimes intentionally introduced into music, not for themselves alone, but to set off the concords by contrast and opposition. Their nece ity in the composition of part-music connet be denied, as they not only improve the concords by opposition, but by causing a momentary distre to the ear, which remains unsatisfied and even uneasy until it hears something better, they give a stimulus to the attention, which would otherwise languish.
