Muttra

Town of n. India, on the Agra; sacked 1017, and repeatedly plundered; held by Britain since 1803; place of pilgrimage. The river is lined with magnificent flights of stairs, Muttra leading to the bathing in the sacred river. Troops of monkeys and turtles are supported by the charity of the people. Pop., 1891, 61,195. Lion's Gate at Mycenæ. Schliemann 1876. An entire room in the Museum of Athens is filled with the treasures and antiquities buried in these tombs. They bear no resemblance to later Greek art, but have, like that art, close relations to Egyptian style. Hence the belief that this culture was that of the CARIANS (q.v.).
