(plaz’mas-dm) [plasma + Gr. σῶμα body]. A leukocyte granule. plasmatic (plaz-mat’ik). Pertaining to or of the nature of the plasma. plasmatogeny (plaz-mat-oj’en-e) [plasma + Gr. yauos marriage]. Union of cells in which the nucleus of each cell is preserved. plasma torr her xis (plaz’’mat-o-reks’is) [Gr. πλάσμα anything formed + ῥῆῇξις rupture]. The bursting of a cell due to the pre ure exerted from within. plasma to sis (plaz-mat-o’sis) the substance of a cell. plasmeba (plaz-me’bah). of dengue. plasmic (plaz’mik). Rich in protoplasm. plasmin (plaz’min). Any one of a series of cell fluids derived from cultures of various bacilli. They are stated to have valuable remedial and immunizing qualities. ’ p., a substance obtained by treating blood with sodic sulphate and then with sodic chlorid. plasmocyte (plaz’mo-sit) [Gr. πλάσμα plasm + xbros cell]. See under disease. plasmoditrophoblast (plaz-mo’de-trof’o-blast). The external layer of the trophoblast, representing the syncytium. ᾿ plasmodium (plaz-mo’de-um), pl. plasmo’dia (Gr. πλάσμα plasm + εἶδος form]. A ma of protoplasm or a protoplasmic cell, formed by the union of several distinct forms whose nuclei remain separate. Ῥ. falcip’arum. See under P. malarie. Ῥ. falcip’arum quotidia’num, the rasite of quotidian estivo-autumnal fever. Ῥ. plas’tokon, Schiller’s supposed protozoan parasite of cancer. Ῥ. mala’riw, the hematozoén of malaria: a parasite existing in various forms in the red blood-corpuscles in malaria, and originally developed in the body of mosquitos of the genus Anopheles, being transmitted to man by the bite of such mosquitos. Three species are recognized: P. vi’tax, the tertian parasite; P. malu’ria, the quartan parasite; and P. immacula’- tum or falcip’arum, the parasite of pernicious or tropical malaria. The parasite is an irregular ma of protoplasm exhibiting ameboid movements, and increasing in size until it fills the entire corpuscle, at the same time becoming pigmented. As the plasmodium grows the blood-corpuscle becomes paler, and finally segmentation of the plasmodium begins, continuing until each segment becomes a small spherule, when the corpuscle bursts and the spores escape. The cycle of development within the body of the anopheles is as follows: When the mosquito takes the malarial blood into its stomach, flagellate forms (microgametocytes) are formed and their flagella (microgametes) are discharged, and, moving toward non-flagellate forms (microgametes), penetrate their bodies, thus fertilizing them. The fertilized form (zygole or szygocyte) penetrates the- stomach-wall and remains attached to the outer surface. Here they undergo change into rounded cystic bodies called meres or odcysts, which contain numerous spindle-shaped bodies (t/asts or sporo- 745
