Lee, CHARLES

1731-1782. English officer, who came to America 1773, purchased an estate in Va. 1775, and in July was made Major-gen. in the Continental army, hoping to supersede Washington. His character and abilities were greatly overrated, and the appointment proved most unfortunate. His misconduct caused the lo of Fort Washington Nov. 16, 1776.
