salve line (salvelin)

Belonging to the genus Salve lin us. Salve lin us (sal-ve-li'nus), n. [NL. (Richardson, 1836), said to be based on G. salbling, a small salmon.] A beautiful and extensive genus of Salmonidæ; the chars. They have the Salve-bug vomer toothle , the scales very small (200 ( Æga psora). or more in the course of the lateral line), and the body spotted with red or gray. The type of this genus is Salmo salve lin us of Linnæus, the char of Europe. All the American "trout," so called, are chars, and belong to this genus. The great lake-trout, Mackinaw trout, longe, or togue, S. namaycush, represents a section of the genus called Cristivomer. (See cut under lake trout, 2.) The common brook-trout of the United States is S. fontinalis (see cut under char4 ); the blue-back or oqua a trout is S. oqua a; the Dolly Varden trout of California is S. malm a. There are several other species or varieties.
