(1855), American College president. Born at Hampden Sydney, Va., s. of den College in 1873 and University of Virginia in 1877. Also studied in Germany. Was profe or of chemistry in University of North Carolina, and State Chemist, an executive officer of the wn Centennial Exposition at New rleans 1884-1885, and A istant Secretary of Agriculture 1893-97. He was President of the University of Tenne ee 1887-1904, and President of the University of Cincinnati from 1904. Published works: History of Agricultural Education in America, 1899; Agriculture and Education, The Problem in the South, 1903; Fighting for a New World, 1919. He retired in 1920.
