Moscheles

(mo'-shel-es), Ignaz, pst, teacher, b. Prague, May 30, 1794; d. Leipzig, Mar. 10, 1870. Son of Jewish merchant; pupil of D. Weber at Prague Cons, (played own concerto in public at 14), of Albrechtsberger and Salieri at Vienna; prepared pf. score of Fiddio under Beethoven's direction; as pst. rivalled Meyer beer and Hummel; in course of succe ful tours gave le ons to Mendel ohn at Berlin; 1821-46 lived in London, teaching, laying, conducting Philharmonic §oc.; 1846 joined friend Mendel ohn as pf. teacher in Leipzig Cons., where he long continued to teach many pupils who later became distinguished; playing was energetic, brilliant, and rhythmical; though his methods of tone production by touch were those afterward developed by Liszt, M. disapproved of musio of Liszt, Chopin, and other morb modem writers; improvisation said to have been remarkable, and compositions uneven in value, though always well written; those MOUSSORGSKY most likely to endure are concertos, 24 etudes and Charakteristische Studien; published letters and autobiog., Ails Moscheles Leben.
