METATHESIS

(Gr. /xirce., and ^io-ie, position.) In Grammar, the transposition of the letters of a word i a figure of uncommon occurrence in modern orthography, but which very ordinarily takes place in the gradual formation of the dialects of a language: e.g. German, ro ; English, horse. See Metaplasm. [s. 748]
