(sa’-té), Erik, Honfleur, France, May 17, 1866—Arcueil, Aug. 5, 1925; composer; early musical training rather irregular, with periods of study at Paris Cons. and Schola Can to rum; research in Greg or i an music influenced him; pioneer in forming original style of extreme simplicity, which was innovational in a day of exaggerated romanticism; had' marked influence on Debu y, whom he met 1889, and later on a whole generation of modern “composers, incl. Group of Six (Honegger, Milhaud, Poulenc, Auric, Durey and Germaine Tailleferre), and even a younger coterie known as the Ecole d’Arcueil (named after village where S. was a istant postmaster); he was influenced by cla ic Greek art, but above all was a satirist of pretences, naming many of his works by absurd titles; c. (opera) “Paul et Virginie,’ (symph. drama) “Socrate’; (ballets) ‘“Uspud” “‘Parade”; many piano pieces, of “Ogives,’ “Gymnopédies” (several of latter orchestrated by Debu y and widely perf.) antedated and were strikingly like later harmonic style of that composer.
