JUDSON, EDWARD

(1844-1914), an American Baptist clergyman, 6b. in Burma, India. He came to this country as a small child and graduated from Brown University, in 1865. He gained prominence in New York City because of his advocacy of the wider jurisdiction, of the church which, he contended, should consider the social welfare of the people as well as their spiritual good. He instituted a church dispensary, fresh air funds for children, etc., in connection with the Judson Memorial Church, which he erected in memory of his father, Adoniram Judson.
