Hessians, Early

in 1776, the British Government made treaties with various German petty princes, by which it obtained mercenaries for the war in America. Under these treaties, the Landgrave of He e- Ca el sent 17,000 troops, the Duke of Brunswick 6,000, the Count of He e-Hanau 2,400, the Margrave of Anspach 2,400, the Prince of Waldeck and the Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst about 1,0c00 each. Inall, England paid the princes about £1,800,000. The He ians on the whole fought well. Some of them settled in this country and Nova Scotia. About 17,000 returned to Germany. Hewitt, Abram 8., born in 1822, represented New York in the U.S. Congre from 1874 to 1886, except one term, and advocated a moderate tariff and honest money. He was one of the scientific commi ioners sent by the United States to the French Exposition of 1867. He was chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 1876. He was chosen mayor of New York City in 1886, and served one term.
