[Latin=the crocodile (q. v.).] Zool.: A genus of Reptiles, the typical one of the family Crocodilide and the order Crocodilia. They have an oblong, blunt, and flattened snout, with two long canine teeth, those of the lower jaw received into a notch in the upper one. The Nilotic, or Common Crocodile, Crocodilus vulgar is , belongs to the genus. The Alligators of the West Indies also belong to the genus, but those on this continent are ranked under the genuine genus Alligator (q. v.).
