ORTOLAN

The name given in France and England to a species of Fran^illidce greatly esteemed for the delicacv of its flesh when m season. It is the ortolano of the lulians, and the fettammcr of the Germans. The ortolan is a native of northern Africa; but In the summer and autumnal months it resorts to southern Europe and frequently migrates to the central and even the northern parts.
