fagopyrum (pyr as pir)

[ Gr.phage in = to eat; Lat. fag us =beech, and Gr. pyrēn =a kernel.] Bot.: A genus of Polygon aceæ, tribe Polygonese. Its type is buckwheat, Fagopyrum esculentum, often called by its old name, Polygonum fagopyrum. Its nuts are eaten for their inealy albumen, as are those of F. tataricum, and others. făg-ot, s.
