Fluorine

For Fl. At. wt. 19. Isolated first by Moi an 1886, from HF, in which Ampère declared its existence 1810. Its chief sources are fluorspar and cryolite, prepared by pa ing an electric current through liquid hydrofluoric acid. It is a colorle gas with an odor like that of chlorine, is extremely energetic, combining with all elements except oxygen; it is, therefore, very difficult to preserve it. See HYDROFLUORIC ACID.
