EPAULETTES

(Fr.) Distinguishing ornaments worn both by military and naval officers. In the different armies of the German states ensigns are not allowed to wear epaulettes; and hence the phrase " to obtain epaulettes," is synonymous with " to become a lieutenant." In the British army all oflJcers with the rank of captain upwards wear two epaulettes; all under that rank only one. [s. 417]
