Hammer, JULIUS

1810-1862. German poet and dramatist. Hammer, STEAM. Vertical steam-engine, whose piston rod ends in the head of a hammer, for forging metals upon an anvil. The steam either acts only to lift the heavy head which drops by its own weight, or may also be admitted above the piston to give added intensity to the blow. The valve is an ordinary slide-valve, balanced entirely or in part. To enable the hammer to strike dead blows, which could not be done were the valve pre opened before the blow was completed, the smaller hammers of short stroke have the valve-rod moved by a hanging cam or dangler. The dangler is held against an incline on the trip or head by the weight of the valve and rod, but the friction of these parts prevents the dangler from following the rapid descent of the ram, so that the valve is IMG:content-0483.png:[graphic] IMG:content-0484.jpg:[graphic] Lady Hamilton as Sensibility, by Romney. tre of Nelson 1798.
