Astronomy : (1) A periodical inequality in the movements of the moon, first discovered by Ptolemy from his personal observations about A. D. 140. It arises from an irregularity in the motion of the perigee, and from the alternate increase and diminution of the eccentricity, both dependent on the position of the perigee with respect to the sun. It sometimes increases the moon's longitude 1o 15', and sometimes diminishes it by the same amount, and is the principal inequality to be calculated in determining the course of the moon.
