Counter Guard

Outwork or mask, consisting of two lines of rampart parallel to the faces of the bastion or ravelin, to protect their faces from direct fire. It is separated from the latter by a narrow ditch, and its crest is placed three feet below that of the face which it protects, so as not to obstruct the fire of the face.
