galeopsis

[Lat. galeopsis; Gr. galeopsis, from galee a weasel, and ops is appearance. The comparison is between the corolla of the plant and a weasel's head.] Bot.: Hemp-nettle. A genus of Labiate (Lamiacese), family Lamide. The calyx is campanulate, the anther cells opposite, bursting transversely by two valves. The following are well-known species: (1) Galeopsis ladanum , the Red; (2) G. dubia , the Downy; and (3) G. tetrahit , the Common Hemp-nettle. G. versicolor , the Large-flowered Hemp-nettle, is reduced by Sir Joseph Hooker to a sub-species of No. găl-er-ic-u-lāte, a. [Lat. galericulum, dim. of galerus a hat or cap.] Botany , .: 1.
