A society consisting of members, a ociates, and subscribers, formed at Manchester, England, in 1847, since extended to other countries, to promote the use of cereals, pulse, and fruit as articles of diet; and to induce habits of abstinence from fish, flesh, and fowl as food. Members are pledged to adopt the vegetarian diet, a ociates simply agreeing to promote the objects of the society.
