Town of Livonia, Ru ia, founded 1030; once of the Hanseatic League; taken by Swedes 1625, by Ru ians 1704. Its university was founded by Gustavus Adolphus 1632. reconstituted by Alexander I. 1802, and Ru ian i zed since 1887; it has 5 faculties, 73 profe ors, and nearly 2,000 students. Pop., 1891, 40,884, mainly German.
