String-quartet’; 1883 1st prof. of vin. in N, E. Cons.; 1890, 1st. prof. of vin. and head of orch. dept. Cincinnati Cons.; 1897-1905, at Milan; 1906, at Manhattan Op. House, N. Y.; after 1907, taught in San Francisco; where d. April 23, 1939. (2) Giuseppe, Venice, Nov. 17, 18538— Milan, May 31, 1927; eminent dram. barytone; at first a ’cellist at La Scala; engaged to play in Boston Symph.; also in Adamowski Quartet; 1893, after vocal study, with Hinrichs Op. Co.; also Juch and Grau companies; 1895-08, Met. Op.; later in Europe.
