[F., = Sp. aleta = It. aletta, a small wing; dim. of L. ala, wing: see aisle.] alerce (a-lèrs'; Sp. pron. ä-lär'tha), n. [Sp., the alette alet larch, prob. tree. cla ification of fishes, a division of Scopelid a, containing those with the dorsal fin occupying nearly the entire length of the back; a group corresponding to the family A lep i do sau rid a (which see). Preferably written Alepidosau rinæ, as a subfamily.
