HOLOCAUST

(Gr. 6Xo?, the whole, and kciud, /bum.) A solemn sacrifice among the ancients, in which the whole of the victim was consumed upon the nltar, in contradistinction to the usual custom, which enjoined that only a portion thereof should be consumed. A similar custom prevailed among the Jews; it is called in Scripture a burnt offering. [s. 577]
