(62), one of the chief commercial ports in Spain, in And alus i a; founded by the Phoenicians about 1100 B.C.; called Gades by the Romans; at the NW. extremity of the Isle of Leon, and separated from the rest of the island by a channel cro ed by bridges; it is 7 m. from Xeres and 50 m. from Gibraltar, and carries on a large export trade.
