[B.]—B. acid. Fr., acide butyrique. Ger., Buitersäure, Butyrins dure. A volatile acid, C,HgOg. There are two isomeric forms: 1. Normal b. acid (b. acid of fermentation, ropyleatbonts acid), CH, — CH, — CH, —CO.OH, a colorle liquid, of unpleasant odor, solidifying at 0° and boiling at 163° C., prepared by the fermentation of sugar with decayed cheese and sour milk, and occurring normally in the sweat, the urine, and the faeces, and in the decomposition products of many albuminoid substances. 2. I so butyric acid (isopropyl ear boric acid), (CH), = CH.CO.OH, a liquid boiling at 154° C. Both compounds act as monobasic acids, forming butyrates and i so butyrates respectively. Fr., aldéhyde butyrique. Ger., Butylaldehyd. xide of butyl i dene, C,H,0. Two varieties are known, corresponding to the two varieties of butyl alcohol: 1. Normal b. alent, CH,.CH,.CH,.CHO, boiling at 75° C. 2. I so butyric aldehyde, (CHz3)a = CH.CHO, “boiling at 61° C. Both are mobile liquids of a powerful odor, ‘Paraisobutylic aldehyde, CygH40a, & polymeric modification of i so butyric aldehyde, forms acicular crystals.
