Aquileia

, or Aquilegia , a town founded by a Roman colony, called from its grandeur, Roma secund a , and situate at the north of the Adriatic sea, on the confines of Italy. The Romans built it chiefly to oppose the frequent incursions of the barbarians. The Roman emperors enlarged and beautified it, and often made it their residence.
