prelate, born in Maryland in 1834, ordained a priest in 1861, became Archbishop of Baltimore in 1877, and was confirmed cardinal in 1886. See appendix, page 483. _ Gibson, Randall I,. (1832-1892), Senator, entered the Confederate army as a private, and rose to various commands at Shiloh, Murfrees- _ boro and Chick am aug a. He represented Louisiana in the U. S. Congre from 1875 to 1883, and in the Senate from 1883 to 1892. _ Giddings, Joshua R. (1795-1864), was born in Pennsylvania. He served in the Ohio militia during the War of 1812, after which he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1820. He was elected to the State Legislature in 1826, and was a Representative from Ohio in the U. S. Congre from 1838 to 1859, during which time he was prominent as an advocate of the right of petition and one of the foremost opponents of slavery. In 1842 he was censured by the House of Repre-: sentatives for his advocacy of anti-slavery measures. He at once. resigned, and was triumphantly re-elected. In 1861 he was appointed Consul-General in Canada, and in 1864 published a history of the Rebellion. Gilbert, Sic Humphrey (1539-1584), Haglish navigator, half. brother of Sir Walter Raleigh, sought to discover a northwest pa age to India, and wrote a treatise on the subject. In 1578 he made an expedition which met with no succe . In 1583 he planted a colony at Newfoundland which did not prosper. On his return he was lost at sea. 292
