Lower-stays

Stays extending from the hounds of any lower-mast; i. e: fore-mast, main-mast, mizen-mast, or jigger-mast, downwards and forward, and fastened to some spot near or on a ship’s deck, for supporting such mast and preventing its inclining aft. See Plate 73. 71, 82 & bt.
