It is a colorle gas, having a sp. gr. of 1.52, soluble in cold water, and po e ing a pungent smell and an acid taste. Inhaled, it destroys animal life by asphyxiation. C. disulphid, bisulphid of carbon, CS2, a colorle , transparent liquid of offensive odor, highly inflammable, very poisonous. It is used as a solvent for caoutchouc and as a reagent. C. monoxid, CO, carbonic oxid, a colorle , tastele , and inodorous gas, one of the products of imperfect combustion. It is actively poisonous. C. nitrid, CN, cyanogen. C. tetra chlorid, CCli5 anesthetic, used in asthma by inhalation. Unof. C. oxy sulphid, a body, COS, formed by conducting sulphur-vapor and carbon monoxid through red-hot tubes; it is a colorle gas, with a faint and peculiar odor. It unites readily with air, forming an explosive mixture, and is soluble in an equal volume of water. It is present in the waters of some mineral springs. 174
