[Pref. di twice, twofold, and Eng. benzyl (q. v.).) matic hydrocarbon obtained (1) by action of sodium Chem.: or C6H5CH2CH2C6H5. An on benzyl chloride C6H5CH2C1; (2) by heating stilbene, C6H5CH=CH-CH5, toban, CH CCC6H5 or desoxy benzoin C6H5 CO CH2 C6H5, with hydriodic acid; or (3) by chemical action of aluminum chloride on benzene, C6H6, and ethylene chloride, C2H4Cl2. Dibenzyl crystallizes in large colorle prisms which melt at 52°, and boil at 284°. Heated to 500° it yields stilbene and toluene. It is oxidized by chromic acid mixture into benzoic acid.
