High Altar

Chief altar in a church or cathedral consecrated for the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. It is usually at the e. end, except IMG:content-0588.jpg:[graphic] when, as at St. Peter's, Rome, it is a pontifical altar. Originally it consisted of a martyr's tomb, later it always contained saints' relics, was overlaid with silver and gold, and richly carved.
