Bright-colored, fish-catching birds, related to the hornbills and toucans. They feed also on reptiles, shell-fish, and insects. Only one genus ( Ceryle ) is found in the w. hemisphere, The Old World has 150 species and 19 genera. The Malay Archipelago is the center for the Alcedinoid division; the Halcyonoid division is best developed in the Ethiopian region.
