Tangent

(tăn'jent.) [From Lat. tan gens, touching. ] (Geom.) A straight line which touches a curve, but which, when produced, does not cut it.-(Trigonometry.) The T. of an arc is a right line touching the arc at one extremity, and terminated by a secant, or radius produced, pa ing through the other extremity. [s. 878]
