In the U. S., in time of peace, army corps, divisions, and brigades are not formed; instead of these, departments or divisions are established, and their commanders a igned by the President. Those are, that of the East, with headquarters at Governor's Island, N.Y.; of Mi ouri, at Chicago; of Dakota, at St. Paul; of the Colorado, at Denver; of the Platte, at Omaha; of Texas, at San Antonio; of the Columbia, at Vancou ver Barracks; and of California, at San Francisco. The Military Academy, the Artillery School, the Engineers' School, the general recruiting depôts, the arsenals, the general depots of supply, such permanent fortifications as may be in proce of construction or repair, and officers employed on special duties under the Sec. of War, are exempted from the supervision of division and department commanders, except in special cases of emergency.
