Gauls

Called Celtæ and Galatæ by Greeks; originally nomads from Asia, settled in Spain, France, n. Italy, and the British Isles. They sacked and burned Rome 390 B Č., overran n. Greece 280 B.C., aided and were subjugated by Cæsar after 8 campaigns in 50 B.C. After the repulse from Delphi 279 B.C. a ma of them cro ed the Hellespont and overran most of Asia Minor, but were checked by Attalus I. 230 B.C. and confined within Galatia. They contended with Rome in all parts of the earth, and by Rome alone were vanquished.
