Palmatæt (palmate)

pl. [NL., fem. pl. of L. palm at us, marked with the palm of the hand: see palmate1.] In ornith., the palmate or webfooted birds collectively, considered as a major group of aquatic birds; the swimming as distinguished from the wading or grallatorial birds. In Nitzsch's cla ification (1829) the group consisted of the Long i pennes, Nasutæ, Ungui rostres, Stegano podes, and Py gopodes. palmate (pal'māt), a.
