Alfred ( son of Thomas Herbert, waterman ). Apprentice to a boat-builder; painter of coast scenes with fishing boats and figures and views in the reaches of the Thames; exhibited 14 pictures at R.A., 3 at B.I. and 26 at Suffolk st. 1844–60; obliged to sell his pictures to dealers at low prices; 2 of his pictures are at South Kensington. d.
