(bli’-lé), Karl, b. Feldkirch, May 7, 1880; pupil of Wehrle and de Lange; later at Stuttgart Cons. and of Thuille; gave up violin on account of nervous affliction of the arm; lived in Munich; c. symph., ‘“‘dAn den Mistral”. (from Nietzsche), for mixed chorus and orch., ‘‘Lernt lachen”’ (from Nietzsche’s ‘‘Zarathustra’’), do.; symph. poem ‘‘Flagellantenzug,”. etc. Bli , Arthur, b. London, Aug. 2, 1891; composer; educated Pembroke Coll., Cambridge, R. Coll. of Mus.; pupil of Stanford, Charles Wood and Vaughan Williams; his early string in A and piano quartet in A minor were perf. during his period of war service, but though pub., were later withdrawn by him; incid. mus. to ‘‘As You Like It” heard at Str at ford, 1919; his rhapsody for soprano and tenor, flute, “cor anglais,” string quartet, and ba (winning Carnegie Pub. Fund award and heard at Salzburg Fest., 1922) and his “‘ Rout” (for soprano and chamber orch.) both date from 1920; also c. ‘‘Colour Symphony” (the movements portraying different colours), heard Three Choirs Fest., 1922; ‘‘Melée Fantasque” and ‘“‘Madame Noy,” Pastorale, string quartet; concerto for two pianos and orch.; (orch.) ‘‘Two Studies,” “*Baitle Variations,” “Hymn to Apollo”; Introduction and Allegro: Serenade (for barytone and orch.); songs, piano pieces, etc.; his earliest works marked by lively and sometimes ironic touch, freshne and audacity of invention and pronounced modern tendencies; later productions showed a more serious spirit; notably his ‘‘Aforning Heroes”. for chorus, orator and orch. (1930); arranged suite of music by Purcell; visited U. S., 1923-25.
